Team India’s coaching staff underwent a major overhaul in November last year after Ravi Shastri and other coaches' tenure came to an end.

While Rahul Dravid took over the head coach position from Shastri, Paras Mhambrey was appointed as the bowling coach.

However, the latest report in TOI suggests that a senior player in the Indian team is "very keen" to have former pacer Ajit Agarkar as the bowling coach till at least the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Agarkar, who spearheaded the Indian pace attack in the 2000s, has represented the country in 26 Tests, 191 ODIs and 4 T20Is, claiming a total of 349 wickets. In particular, his ODI numbers were impressive as he took 288 scalps in the 50-over format at an average of 27.85.

The 44-year-old was also in line to become the chief selector last year before being pipped by Chetan Sharma.

"The senior player, who plays a vital role in decision-making in Indian cricket now, wants an experienced hand like Agarkar guiding the bowlers till the 2023 ODI World Cup. Mhambrey is a good bowling coach and can look after budding bowlers at India A, India Under-19 and at pacers the National Cricket Academy," TOI quoted a reliable source as saying.

Before Paras, Bharat Arun served the Indian cricket team as the bowling coach from 2017 to 2021. Arun has often been credited for the fast bowling revolution which the national team has seen in the last few years.

Under his mentorship, the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Shami, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Siraj among others improved their bowling by many folds and helped India win Test series away from home.
