Former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson heaped praise on the current Test captain, Pat Cummins, for handling the Justin Langer issue with maturity, and said he is now super excited to see the next phase of the Australian cricket team under his leadership.
Earlier this month, Langer controversially resigned from Australia head coach position even before completing his stint till June 2022 after he was denied a long-term contract by Cricket Australia (CA).
Later, the former claimed that his style of coaching wasn’t loved by some of the cricketers and coaches.
After that, Cummins and CA were heavily criticized by the former cricketers for not backing Langer publicly and for criticizing his style, despite the fact that it brought a lot of success post-ball-tempering scandal.
As reported by ANI, Watson said on 'The ICC Review': “For me, he is the ultimate. He was in a no-win situation leading up to Justin Langer handing in his resignation because if he commented either way it was not going to look good.”
He added, “The way he handled it after it had settled down and Justin Langer had resigned, he has handled it all so well because he is so personable, very honest, and very endearing to the public and to his teammates.”
Watson also said that he is looking forward to seeing Cummins taking the Australian side forward. He signed off by saying, “I am super excited for the Australian team with Pat leading the charge and the next phase of Australian cricket because they have certainly got the talent and the leadership to be able to take it forward.”
