Australia head coach Justin Langer has reportedly refused to take a handsome bonus offered by Cricket Australia (CA) as he led the national side to its maiden ICC T20 World Cup glory last year
Australia also retained the Ashes 2020-21 series at home against England beating the rivals 4-0. Australia twice won the Ashes under Langer.
Langer found it "morally inappropriate" to accept the bonus at a time when Cricket Australia (CA) witnessed massive job cuts due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Australian newspaper, The Daily Telegraph, reported that the Australian cricket coach, Justin Langer, secretly knocked back a six-figure sum in bonuses because he felt it would be morally inappropriate amid COVID-19 job cuts.
The report further claimed that Langer had privately informed his bosses he could not, in all good conscience, accept bonus payments while other staff members had been made redundant. However, neither side has made the matter public.
Notably, CA had served pink slips to a total of 40 staff and revised salaries of their executive staff a well which helped the Australian board save around Australian $40 million.
Meanwhile, Langer's four-year contract as head coach with CA is set to end in June 2022. It has been widely reported for a long time that players were not happy with his allegedly volatile temper, which could play a role in him getting an extension in the role.
A report claimed, “Langer's future goes on the line at a Cricket Australia board meeting on Friday where a recommendation will be made by performance boss Ben Oliver over whether to offering him a new deal. Langer's thoughtful gesture to resist the temptation to squeeze his contract for all it is worth adds to the complex narrative around his future.”
The report also suggested that even if Langer gets a fresh contract with CA, it will be a short-term one and the white and red ball roles are unlikely to be split if the contract is two years or less.
