Former English skipper Kevin Pietersen revealed why he dubbed Yuvraj Singh a 'pie-chucker 'England's tour of India in 2008.
Kevin Pietersen is arguably one of the best batters the sport has witnessed. The right-hander always hogged the limelight for his off and on-field antics. He was also known for sledging players.
During England’s tour to India in 2008, Kevin Pietersen, who was the captain of the side, had a face-off with Yuvraj Singh. After being repeatedly getting dismissed off Yuvraj Singh's bowling, Kevin Pietersen dubbed him a 'pie-chucker'.
In a video for the Legends League Cricket, Kevin Pietersen recalled that incident and admitted that playing left-arm spinner Yuvraj Singh was always an issue for him. He revealed when a former Indian cricketer came to bowl, he thought that would be his scoring opportunity.
But Yuvraj knocked him over and he got frustrated. He added that his favorite shot against him was a defensive shot, that he got past ‘pie-chucker’.
“Playing against Yuvraj Singh was always an issue. Left-arm spin was always an issue. But when Yuvraj came on I thought this is the opportunity to score. Then he started knocking me over. Then I started to get a bit frustrated but my favorite shot against Yuvraj was the forward defensive block. That defensive shot, you can get past this pie-chucker,” Kevin Pietersen said.
Kevin Pietersen further revealed why he labeled Yuvraj Singh as a pie-chucker. He said that the left-arm spinner knocked him a couple of times and didn’t want the rest of the world to think that he was good.
He also added that he and Yuvraj Singh are very very close friends” and that the pie-chucker incident was “fun at the time.”
“I called Yuvraj a pie-chucker purely based on the fact that he knocked me over a couple of times and I didn’t want to tell the rest of the world that he was any good. It was that rubbish provider you play with. You think I am bigger than the other player and try and force yourself on the opposition and he comes back at you”, he said.
Kevin Pietersen won the inaugural edition of the Legends League Cricket 2022 with World Giants. The right-hander registered scores of 14, 53, and 86 and 11 and 48 in five matches.
