Kohli resigned as Test captain because things aren't smooth within Indian team- Salman Butt

He also felt changes in the coaching staff could have played a role in Virat Kohli's decision.

Former Pakistan captain and veteran batter Salman Butt shared his views on Virat Kohli's sudden decision to quit the Test captaincy of the Indian cricket team, claiming there was something amiss in the Indian team set-up which forced the latter to take the shocking decision.

Kohli dropped a bombshell on Saturday, January 15, a day after India's hopes of winning their first-ever Test series in South Africa were squashed by the hosts by winning the final Test by 7 wickets to clinch the three-match Test series 2-1 in Cape Town.

Butt said on his YouTube channel: “After reading his note on Twitter, I got a vibe that he's had enough. And this is not the age where a player goes, "okay, I am done. Someone else please take over". He still has 5 years on him and it's not like he's quitting cricket alll together.”

He added, “I am getting a feeling that not everything is smooth within the set-up. One of the other reasons could be the absence of like-mindedness. There was organizational set-up, wherein Ravi Shastri was present and his crew worked with Kohli like a machine. (Now that they have left), I feel there is an issue with compatibility also and when that happens, everything else starts mattering.”

Notably, Kohli finished his captaincy tenure as India's most successful captain in Test cricket history with 40 wins in 68 Test matches having taken charge of the Test team in the 2014-15 tour of Australia.

India never lost a home Test series under Kohli’s captaincy while winning away series in Australia, Sri Lanka, and West Indies, while leading against England 2-1 with one Test left.
