Pakistan's legendary spinner Saqlain Mushtaq has stepped down from the role of interim head coach. Mushtaq conveyed to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) that he wouldn't take the role full-time due to personal commitments.

As per sources, Saqlain informed PCB chief Ramiz Raja of his inability to take up the role full-time. He was appointed for the role after the sudden resignation of head coach Misbah ul Haq in September, last year before the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021.

“Saqlain told the chairman that while he was happy to have contributed as interim head coach he wouldn’t be able to accept a long-term and permanent assignment as head coach as he had prior business and personal commitments.”

“Saqlain conveyed that already his business has been affected due to his absence with the Pakistan team as interim head coach,” the source said, as quoted by PTI.

Mushtaq served in the role for the 2021 T20 World Cup, Pakistan tour of Bangladesh, and the series against West Indies at home. The source said Mushtaq had told Ramiz that he would continue with the role at the High-Performance Centre as he wanted to remain based in Lahore but would be available only for a short tour or series assignments.

PCB is likely to appoint a new foreign head coach after both, Pakistan captain Babar Azam and Mushtaq recommended Ramiz in a meeting. 

The PCB has already given advertisements for five coaching positions including a power-hitting batting coach and head coach for the High-Performance Centre.
