Shastri recalls Pant and Gill's conversation which convinced him India is going for Gabba Test win

India's Test win against Australia last year at the Gabba is one of the greatest moments in Indian cricket history. Fighting against all the odds, India had succeeded in breaching Australia's fortress and they won the match by 3 wickets.

The Ajinkya Rahane-led side was not full-strength after losing some key players to injury earlier in the series. But it didn't affect them and they had a will to win the Test match, which former India head coach Ravi Shastri recalled in his latest interview.

Shastri, speaking on Star Sports' show 'Bold & Brave The Ravi Shastri Way', revealed that he overheard the conversation between Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill, who were talking about going after the target instead of settling for a draw.

"I thought that was unbelievable, especially on that last day. I always knew at tea time, when we were three down, that it's pointless telling Rishabh anything.

"I can't tell you what the conversation was. From upstairs I went to the loo. These 2 young boys were having a chat – Gill, and Pant. Gill had batted magnificently to set it up with a brilliant 90."

"I stopped and listened and walked straight past, and I said 'keep going'. Did not say a word. I knew in my mind they were going for it. I endorse that kind of cricket. In trying to do that you might lose, but if you pull it off, that's the ultimate heist. That's what we did there," Shastri added.

Opener Gill had slammed a brilliant 91 while Pant played a sensational knock of unbeaten 89 to take India home at the Gabba, chasing down 328 runs in 97 overs.

Washington Sundar and Pant stitched a partnership of 53 runs in 55 deliveries for the 6th wicket to put Australia under pressure. When Sundar got out for a well-made 22, India needed 10 runs more, and Pant eventually secured a historic victory with a four-off Josh Hazlewood.
