The contrasting statements made by the BCCI President Sourav Ganguly and Virat Kohli on the ODI captaincy change have made one thing clear: there was clearly a communication gap between him and the BCCI officials.
With multiple theories doing the rounds following Kohli’s explosive press conference before the Indian team's departure to South Africa on Wednesday, December 15, the cricket fraternity and fans are divided on the captaincy controversy in Indian cricket.
Joining the fray, former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Nayan Mongia shared his views on the ODI captaincy controversy, saying Kohli has openly told everything and has come clean.
Reacting to the latest controversy, Mongia told NDTV: “It’s between Virat and the (BCCI) president. Virat has come clean and openly said everything.”
Notably, the BCCI selection committee recently removed Kohli from the ODI captaincy without any early intimation and appointed Rohit Sharma as the new ODI captain of the Indian cricket team.
Earlier, Rohit had also replaced Kohli as T20I captain after the Delhi-based batter stepped down from the role after the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021.
Ganguly had claimed that he and the BCCI chief of selection committee had requested Kohli to stay as India’s T20I captain, but Kohli refuted the claims. The BCCI president had said that the selectors didn’t want two captains in limited-overs cricket, so they handed over the reins of both white-ball teams to Rohit.
But before leaving for South Africa, Kohli shocked one and all by revealing that he was never asked not to leave the T20I captaincy and was told about his sacking as ODI captain one and a half hours before the formal announcement last week, which created controversy.
