Shafali Verma says, I get very happy when I am compared with 'legend' Virender Sehwag

Shafali Verma also said that her first Test innings was the best moment for her in 2021.

India women cricketer Shafali Verma hailed Virender Sehwag as a legend of the game and said that she always feels happy when people compare her with former Indian batter. 

Ever since the explosive Shafali Verma made her debut for India, she has developed the reputation of being a hard-hitting batter and her aggressive style has impressed many fans and pundits across the globe.

She has also often been compared to Virender Sehwag as many feel that like Sehwag, Shafali Verma also believes in dominating the bowling line-ups in all three formats of the game.

Shafali Verma recently represented Sydney Sixers in the WBBL 2021 and also played for Birmingham Phoenix in the inaugural edition of the Hundred. 

Speaking to ANI at an event, Shafali said that she’ll keep working hard with each day passing. She revealed that she gets very happy when people compare her with Virender Sehwag as it only helps her to get better. 

"I will keep on working hard, I will keep improving and I will strive to get better which each passing day. Virender Sehwag is a legend and I get very happy whenever I am compared with him. It only helps me to get better," Shafali Verma said. 

Shafali also said that making her Test debut was the best moment for her in 2021 as she only got more confident after that. She admitted that every player has own style of play and she has mostly played with boys since her childhood and that’s why she has an aggressive style of play. 

"The best moment in 2021 for me was my first Test innings, after that match I got really confident. I got further motivated after that and I learnt a lot from that experience. Every player has their own style, I have been playing with boys from the starting, I have retained the aggressive style,” she said.

While talking about playing in The Hundred, Verma said that she learnt a lot from other players. She added that this format will play a great role in taking women’s cricket forward. 

"Hundred format was very enjoyable, we learnt a lot from other players. Women's cricket will grow and this format is great for taking the women's game ahead. It is good for us,” she said. 

Notably, Shafali Verma played two Tests for India this year. She impressed many with her performance as in two matches she amassed 242 runs, with the highest score being 96.  

The right-hander will play a crucial for Team India in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022, which begins from 4th March, 2022. The Mithali-Raj-led side will begin their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan on 6th March at the Bay Oval in Tauranga.
