Former England captain Michael Vaughan said that Australia thumping the Joe Root-led side in the first Test of Ashes 2021-22 in Brisbane doesn’t surprise him as the visitors have been failing with the bat in Tests for quite some time now.
Australia outclassed England by 9 wickets in the first match of ongoing Ashes 2021-22 to go 1-0 up in the series.
Batting first, after winning the toss, England had a horrendous start as they were just bundled out for 147 runs in their first innings. They were then left clueless as, after a solid start by David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne, Travis Head’s 152 helped hosts put a first-innings total of 425 runs on the board.

The visitors were also sloppy in the field as they dropped many catches and also bowled a host of no-balls to only hurt their chances in the match further.
Even though Joe Root (89) and Dawid Malan (82) led England’s fightback on Day 3 but they failed to counter the Australian bowlers on Day 4. They suffered a batting collapse as they lost eight wickets for just 77 runs to set Australia a target of only 20 runs, which they chased in 5.1 overs.
Speaking to foxsports.com.au, Michael Vaughan was disappointed with England’s performance in the first Test of Ashes 2021-22. He said that everything that happened in the match didn’t surprise him.
“I thought that might happen. It happens a lot to this England side where you get a load of hope and, before you know it, you’re done and dusted quite quickly. Everything that’s happened this week just does not surprise me," Michael Vaughan said.
Vaughan lashed out at the England team, saying that they have a similar "fundamental" problem against the best teams like Australia, New Zealand and India. Citing examples from the last two years, he noted that Joe Root and co. have a tendency to put up "horrible sessions" in Tests.

“You kind of have hope that things can be different and they’ll get it right because they’ve got so much talent in the team, but fundamentally against the best teams, this is what England do.
“If you look at it over the past few years, when they’ve played the better teams Australia, India, New Zealand; it happened in the summer that we’ve just had, it happened against Australia in 2019 this England side, they have horrendous sessions,” Michael Vaughan said.
The second Test of Ashes 2021-22, which will also be a pink-ball Test, will begin from 16th December in Adelaide.
