Mumbai Police Cyber Cell on Wednesday arrested a man from Hyderabad in relation to giving rape threats to the daughter of Indian cricketer Virat Kohli after the team’s loss to Pakistan in the T20 World Cup 2021.
As India suffered their maiden loss to Pakistan in World Cups, the social media was abuzz with reactions, but some of the trolls took it too far with then captain Virat Kohli and pacer Mohammad Shami boring the brunt of online abuse.
Actress Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli’s 9-month-old daughter Vamika received rape threats on social media from a now-deleted Twitter account @Criccrazyygirl, which resulted in the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) asking the Deputy Commissioner of Police to provide them with a copy of the First Information Report (FIR).
KL Rahul moves to 5th spot, Virat Kohli drops to 8th in the latest ICC T20I batting rankings
Issuing a notice to the Delhi Police, DCW had described the online trolling of Virat Kohli and his family as a “serious matter” and asked for “immediate attention.”
This led to the Mumbai Police Cyber Cell arresting accused Ramnagesh Alibathini from Hyderabad. The 23-year-old is a software engineer and worked for a food delivery app earlier.
