The Netherlands all-rounder Ryan ten Doeschate on Friday (October 22) announced his retirement from international cricket. The 41-year-old’s announcement came after the Netherlands failed to qualify for the Super 12 stage of the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021.
Earlier, Doeschate had already announced that the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 would be his last tournament. However, the South Africa-born cricketer got the chance to bat in just one innings in the T20 World Cup 2021 and, unfortunately, he got out for a duck in that game against Ireland.
The all-rounder also played in the Netherlands' previous first-round match against debutants Namibia, but he didn’t bat in the game and was later left out of the team in the last group match against Sri Lanka.
Ten Doeschate said in a Cricket Netherlands (KNCB) statement on Friday: “It's been a tough tour to finish on but it's been a pleasure to be a part of the efforts again. It has always been a privilege to represent The Netherlands.”
He added, “The professionalism and dedication that this team and support staff have shown has been inspirational. I'm grateful to the players, coaches, and everyone involved with the KNCB for allowing me to have enjoyed some of the spectacular highs of international cricket.”
Meanwhile, KNCB thanked the all-rounder “for everything he has done for the sport, in the Netherlands and abroad”.
The Netherlands head coach Ryan Campbell said: “Doeschate represented Dutch cricket hope. Sometimes words don’t mean enough when summing up someone’s career. It has been an honor for me as a coach to have him.”
He signed off by saying, “His skill, knowledge of the game & calmness under pressure was outstanding. Finally, he represented cricket hope to the Dutch, he gave us a belief that we could compete against anyone. He will be sorely missed as a player but hopefully not lossed to Dutch cricket entirely.”
Noteworthy, Doeschate has established himself as one of the best players in the associate nations having scored over 25,000 professional runs in his career.
He made his international debut in 2006 against Sri Lanka and went on to play 33 ODIs and 24 T20Is for the Netherlands and scored 1541 runs and scalped 55 wickets in the ODI cricket while managing 533 runs, 13 wickets in T20I cricket for the side.
The all-rounder also scored more than 11,000 first-class runs and scalped 214 wickets, as well as led Essex to their first-ever County Championship title and won the T20 Blast title with the side.
