Indian men’s team is set to create history as it will become the first side to play 1000 ODIs when it faces West Indies on February 6, 2022 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera, Ahmedabad. The other two matches of the series will be played at Jaipur and Kolkata.
India has played 996 ODIs so far, followed by Australia and Pakistan with 958 and 936 ODIs respectively.
The first ODI against South Africa in Boland Park at Paarl would have been Team India’s 1000th game, but postponing the ODIs against New Zealand meant that Ahmedabad would get the honour to host the historical match, according to The Cricketer, which first published the story.
“It is a matter of great pride for us to be hosting the landmark match. The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad is the largest in the world, and hosting India’s 1000th ODI match will add another feather in the cap,” Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) joint secretary Anil Patel told Sportstar
The GCA will start planning for the milestone match post the T20 World Cup. The office-bearers of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are currently in the United Arab Emirates for the Indian Premier League and the T20 World Cup and the planning would be done only after they return to the country.
In the 996 ODIs, India has a win percentage of 54.71, with 518 victories, 428 losses, 9 ties and 41 matches ending with no result. The team is placed third after South Africa (634 matches; 63.57 per cent) and Australia (63.36).
In 2016, Kanpur’s Green Park hosted Indian men’s team’s 500th Test match where former Indian captains were felicitated to celebrate the milestone.
