"Players used to fall asleep during his meetings"- Salman Butt on 'high-tech' KKR coach John Buchanan

Butt played under Buchanan's guidance during his time with KKR in IPL 2008.

KKR captain Sourav Ganguly with coach John Buchanan during IPL 2008 | TwitterFormer Pakistan cricketer Salman Butt reckons the former World Cup-winning coach of the Australian team, John Buchanan, should not be glorified citing his experience of playing under the ‘high-tech’ coach during his time with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) back in 2008.

Buchanan guided the Australian team to World Cup triumphs three times from 1999 to 2007. Under the legendary skipper Ricky Ponting, the Australian side was the best in the world for over a decade.

According to Butt, that Australian side was a massive side and he believes that they would have achieved what they have achieved without Buchanan as their coach during the era of their domination.

John Buchanan was a very high-tech coach. He used to have long meetings. I have also run teams and I am not a fan of such long meetings where players fall asleep. Players used to fall asleep in his meetings and he's been part of a lot of coaching projects around the world but none were successful, Butt said in his YouTube video.

The Australian team was a massive side, it wouldn't have mattered if they didn't have a coach at all. Australian players have written the same in their books as well. He was a decent man but the glorifying of his coaching [is wrong]. Give any coach such players and the results will be similar,” he added.

Buchanan spent two years with KKR and was replaced after the team's below-par performances in both seasons. Apart from Australia and KKR, Buchanan has also worked with New Zealand and England.
