Sri Lanka just before hosting India had completed a white-ball tour of England. Even though they failed to win any game in the three-match ODI and as many T20I series, the team was embarrassed more by some of their senior players breaching the bio-bubble in the UK.

There were three players Danushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Mendis, and Niroshan Dickwella waiting to be reprimanded by the Sri Lankan cricket for their actions in Durham.

In late June, they were found to have breached the COVID safety bio-bubble in Durham ahead of the three-match ODI series against England.

After the video of these three players breaching the bio-bubble went viral on social media platforms, they were immediately suspended and sent back home. They faced a five-member disciplinary committee headed by a judge and were found guilty.

Now, the five-member disciplinary committee formed by Sri Lanka Cricket has recommended a two-year ban for Gunathilaka, Mendis, and an 18-month ban for Dickwella. Additionally, they have been imposed a heavy fine of USD 25,000.

Due to their actions, the trio was overlooked in Sri Lanka’s ongoing home series against India which consisted of three-match ODI and as many T20I series. The committee's punitive recommendations are subject to approval by the SLC executive committee, SLC officials said.
