Hong Kong cricket team captain Aizaz Khan has been arrested by the Hong Kong police over allegations of insurance fraud on Tuesday (July 20).

According to a report in the South China Morning Post (SCMP), Aizaz is allegedly involved in an insurance scam involving HKD 3 million (Around Rs 2.87 crore).

The 28-year-old was taken away by police from his public housing flat in Chai Wan after he was found to have continued playing matches despite claiming he was injured in a traffic accident and unable to work.

The Hong Kong police’s commercial crime bureau started investigating the case after the insurance company reported a fraud case against Khan in June 2021.

Lam Chun-Hong, the senior inspector of the Hong Kong police’s commercial crime bureau, said: “He claimed the injuries he suffered in the accident have caused him to lose his ability to work.”

He added, “[However], our investigation showed the man continued to take part in 10 or more sports competitions to receive income after the traffic accident. He was then suspected of defrauding a huge sum of money in compensation from the insurance company.”

Noteworthy, Aizaz was appointed as the Hong Kong captain in 2019. He has so far played 58 international matches and picked 62 wickets for the Hong Kong team. The bowler has bagged 16 wickets in 19 ODIs, while picked up 46 wickets in 39 T20Is.
