Former India wicket-keeper Saba Karim wants MS Dhoni's jersey number 7 to be retired

MS Dhoni has quit international cricket in 2020 and he last played for India in 2019 World Cup.

Ex-India cricketer and former BCCI GM (Cricket Operations) Saba Karim wants jersey number 7 to be retired from Indian cricket in respect of MS Dhoni. Former skipper MS Dhoni is among the topmost influential cricketers in India who left a huge impact on Indian cricket.

It was reported that BCCI had unofficially retired the jersey number 10 of Sachin Tendulkar after Shardul Thakur had used the same jersey number while playing for India but had to change following outrage from the fans. Dhoni has retired from international cricket last year in August. He played his last match for India during the 2019 World Cup.

“I think not only MS Dhoni’s jersey, but the BCCI must also preserve the jerseys of many other Indian legends. They must also ensure that the jersey number of that legend is not worn by anyone else. In this manner, one can recognize the achievements and the contributions of the greats of Indian cricket. Most importantly, by doing so you give some much-deserved respect to such legends," said Karim on the Khelneeti podcast.

Although Dhoni is only active as a cricketer in the Indian Premier League, Karim is hoping he stays connected with Indian cricket in some new role.

“Although he is no longer part of international cricket, I hope he can continue serving Indian cricket, just like he did all these years. He is grooming a lot of youngsters with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). I wish he keeps mentoring and guiding young players at the state level as well. If that happens, it will be great for the future of Indian cricket," said Karim.
