After a 0-3 whitewash in the T20I series at the hands of England, Sri Lanka on Monday (June 28) suffered another blow as opener Avishka Fernando was ruled out of the ODI series of their ongoing UK tour.

Fernando will miss the upcoming three-match ODI series against England, starting on Tuesday (June 29) at Chester-le-Street in Durham after sustaining a grade two tear to his quadriceps.

The 23-year-old had picked up the injury while fielding in the second T20I of the three-match T20I series against England – which forced him to miss the third and final T20I on Saturday in Cardiff.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) confirmed on Twitter on Monday, that Fernando has sustained an injury to his right quadriceps, resulting in him missing the remainder of the games on the England tour.

The SLC tweeted, “Avishka Fernando has sustained an injury to his right quadriceps (Grade 2 Tear). Fernando suffered this injury while fielding during the 2nd T20i played against England at Cardiff.”

It was a major setback for the right-hander as the ongoing England tour was his first tour with the Sri Lankan team since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. He had earlier missed the limited-overs series in the West Indies and Bangladesh after failing the fitness tests.
