Former Sri Lanka spinner Rangana Herath has joined Bangladesh as their spin-bowling consultant, while South Africa’s Ashwell Prince has been appointed as their batting consultant on Saturday (June 26).
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced the appointments of Herath and Prince on Saturday. Both the coaches will travel to Zimbabwe later this week to join the Bangladesh team for their multi-format series – one-off Test, three ODIs, and three T20Is in July.
Herath replaced interim spin coach Sohel Islam while Prince will take over from Jon Lewis. The former Sri Lankan spinner will be in the role of a spin-bowling consultant until the end of Bangladesh’s campaign in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 in October-November, while Prince has reached an agreement with the BCB to work with the Tigers for the upcoming tour of Zimbabwe 2021.

BCB cricket operation chairman Akram Khan told reporters on Saturday, “At this point, getting a coach is very difficult due to Covid, so we have picked them on a short-term basis and if we find them satisfactory, we will continue with them.”
Khan further stated, “Prince was a good batsman and we have spoken with our head coach (Domingo) before including him in our set-up. If the players like Herath and we are happy certainly we will think about him beyond the T20 WC.”
Noteworthy, the 43-year-old Herath, who is the most successful left-arm spinner in the history of Test cricket with 433 wickets, is an ICC/SLC Level 3 coach specializing in spin bowling.
On the other hand, Prince, who represented South Africa in 119 international games across the formats, is a Level 3 coach and worked as the batting consultant and interim-head coach for South Africa A side.
