England's Test debutant Ollie Robinson is in trouble after his old sexist and racist tweets started doing rounds on social media. As per reports, Robinson may be dropped from the second Test against New Zealand, although he has been impressive with the ball in the first Test.
After the incident, England's batting coach Graham Thorpe said England could start taking a look at their player's social media history before selection in the side.
“It’s clearly something that might need to be looked at so that a day like yesterday doesn’t happen,” Thorpe was quoted as saying by ‘BBC’.
The English pacer, who's 27-years-old, apologized for his tweets after they came out on Twitter after he made his Test debut against New Zealand. He regrets his tweets which he posted during his teenage.
“On the biggest day of my career so far, I am embarrassed by the racist and sexist tweets that I posted over eight years ago, which have today become public,” Robinson said in a statement. “I want to make it clear that I’m not racist and I’m not sexist.”
He continued, “I deeply regret my actions, and I am ashamed of making such remarks. I would like to unreservedly apologize to anyone I have offended, my teammates, and the game as a whole in what has been a day of action and awareness in combating discrimination from our sport. I just want to apologize to everyone. I regret it hugely.”
Thorpe confirmed that the fast bowler has admitted his mistake and apologized to the dressing room for his tweets.
“In our dressing room, we had to support him. It was a tough day for him yesterday. He had to say sorry to the dressing room and sorry to the world. From that perspective, it was very hard for him, but he knows he’s made a mistake,” Thorpe said.
“For whatever he has done, it’s still not easy to go back out and perform. He showed good character and he had to be resilient. We were really pleased. His level of performance was exceptional,” he added.
