New Zealand’s newest batting sensation Devon Conway has etched his name into the record books by smashing a Test hundred on his debut on Day 1 of the ongoing first Test against England at the historic Lord’s Cricket Ground on Wednesday (Jun2).
In the tourists’ batting line-up, the experienced Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor, and Tom Latham all got starts but failed to convert it into something substantial.
But debutant Conway managed to survive against the lethal English attack comprising James Anderson, MArk Wood, Ollie Robinson and Stuart Broad at Lord’s.
On Day 1 of the ongoing first Test at Lord's, Devon has not only notched up his maiden Test ton but also took New Zealand single-handedly to a strong position 246/3 at stump on Wednesday against England.
After becoming the sixth cricketer to hit a Test ton on his debut at the Lord's, the left-hander said he nether thought of scoring a century on his debut and even at the iconic Home of Cricket.
As reported by ESPNcricinfo, Conway said: “That [scoring a century on debut] never came across my mind. Just getting a Test debut, a chance to play at this level, was all I thought about.”
He added, “Very happy, grateful for the opportunity from Cricket Wellington and also the Black Caps as well. A pretty special feeling and one I certainly didn't think about when I made that move.”
The 29-year-old also revealed his skipper Williamson's words to him when he walked back to the dressing room after his memorable day on Wednesday against England.
He further revealed when the tourists were seeing the beauty of the Lord’s ground before the first Test he asked Williamson how he feels to see his name at the honors board, he didn’t reply at that time, but when he returned to the dressing room, the skipper told him “now you know what it's like, bro”.
Conway recalled, “When we arrived at Lord's a couple of days ago we walked into the changing room and got the opportunity to have a look at all the legends and the names up on that honors board.”
He signed off by saying, “Funny enough I had a conversation with Kane asking what it feels like to see your name on that board [for Williamson's hundred at Lord's in 2015], and the first thing he said when I went up into the changing room was 'Now you know what it's like, bro'. It's pretty cool, it's a great place and I'm grateful my name can go up there.”
