Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik has responded to former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi's comment on his captaincy. Afridi recently said that when Malik was appointed captain in 2009, he almost ended his international career.

“I decided not to play cricket anymore,” Afridi told Samaa TV in an interview. “Shoaib Malik had become the captain and there was a lot of politics going on within the team.”

Speaking to Cricket Pakistan, Malik said Afridi is right about him getting captaincy way before he deserved it. The 39-year-old also agreed that if he was as wise in 2007 as he is now, he would not have accepted the offer.

"I don't know what my captaincy had to do with his retirement, I think he wrote about that in his book. I was asked the same question earlier and I said that if he said I was made rushed into captaincy, he is absolutely right.

"In a lot of interviews, I have said that if I was as wise in 2007 as I am today, I would have never accepted the offer," Malik explained while speaking to Cricket Pakistan.

Malik was only 25-year-old when he got the captaincy in 2007. He led Pakistan to 24 wins in 36 ODI matches and overall three Test matches, which included one draw and two losses.
