Sourav Ganguly expresses displeasure over WV Raman’s sacking as India women’s coach

Ramesh Powar replaced WV Raman as the head coach of the Indian women’s cricket team last week.

WV Raman | GettyBCCI President Sourav Ganguly has expressed his displeasure over WV Raman’s ouster as the head coach of the Indian women’s cricket team, reported Cricbuzz on Friday (May 21).

It is learnt that Ganguly has formally expressed his disappointment through letters regarding Raman’s sacking.

Last week, BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) appointed former off-spinner Ramesh Powar as the chief coach of the Indian women’s team, replacing Raman.

While Ganguly didn’t say anything about the appointment of Powar, he was taken aback by Raman’s non-retention as the latter played an instrumental role in guiding the women’s team to the Twenty20 World Cup final in Australia last year.

Although Ganguly has every right to express his opinion, those involved in women’s cricket believe that the CAC (comprising Madan Lal, RP Singh and Sulakshana Naik) is an independent body and its decision should be respected.

“He should know this himself that the CAC is an independent body,” Cricbuzz quoted a BCCI insider as saying.

After being sacked as head coach, WV Raman wrote a letter to BCCI president and NCA chief Rahul Dravid, suggesting that Indian cricket needs to creates a system where players adhere to a ‘healthy team culture’.

“My writing to Sourav was to propel him into action to course-correct, if required. The letter dealt with the need for the system to encourage or ensure players adhere to a healthy team culture. Ganguly has seen it all as a former player and captain, and therefore, I felt it was better to get him into the frame. I also added Dravid because he handles cricketers of the future and might make certain aspects a part of the curriculum in the NCA, if he hasn’t already,” Raman told Cricbuzz earlier this week.

“Typical of the current era, the phrase prima donna, which has never figured in the letter, has hogged the headlines! The whole point of the letter was to appraise Sourav about certain practices that need to be reviewed and rectified, if he so deemed fit.”

In December 2018, WV Raman was appointed the head coach of the India women's team. Interestingly, he had taken over from Powar, who was ousted following a tussle with Mithali Raj in the ICC T20 World Cup 2018.
