Jofra Archer to undergo elbow surgery on May 21; participation in India Test series under clouds

Jofra Archer | GettyEngland fast bowler Jofra Archer is set to undergo surgery on Friday (May 21) to treat his right elbow problem.

It was the same injury that ruled him out of next month’s home Test series against New Zealand, and England would now be hoping that their ace pacer recovers in time for the Test series against India, which is scheduled to be played in August and September.

Archer has been struggling with the elbow injury for some time now. During the India tour earlier this year, he featured in two of England's four Tests, all five T20Is and missed the three-match ODI series due to a worsening elbow injury. He didn’t turn up for Rajasthan Royals (RR) as well in the now-suspended IPL 2021.

"At the moment, he has a bit of an impingement in his elbow," England's bowling coach, Jon Lewis, told the Guardian. "A lot of fast bowlers get it in their ankle, so it's comparable but a different part of the body. Put a lot of pressure and flexion through any joint, it will take a bashing. But bowlers come through ankle impingements. I don't foresee it being a long term major issue.

"From what I understand, either short-term or long term, his elbow will recover. I would expect him to play a lot more international cricket for England. This is just a small blip on his journey."

Jofra Archer returned to action for county side Sussex against Kent last week after the injury lay-off. While he returned with the figures of 2/29 in the first innings, he could only bowl 5 overs in Kent’s second essay and complained of a sore elbow.
