England pacer Jofra Archer’s selection for the series against New Zealand has been put in doubt as his elbow injury resurfaced during a County Championship match on Saturday.
Jofra Archer's elbow injury flared up during the Test series between India and England which saw him missing the two Test matches. He returned to England’s XI and played all the five T20I matches, But had to make himself unavailable for the ODI series against India and was then ruled out of the IPL 2021.
The Barbados-born pacer underwent surgery in March followed by a few weeks of recovery. He made his return last week for Sussex's 2nd XI and was deemed fit to feature against Kent in the County Championship game. Archer registered figures of 2 for 29 in the first innings but could only bowl five overs in the second innings and complained of a sore elbow.
Jofra Archer set to return to competitive cricket for Sussex
Talking about the same Ian Salisbury head coach of Sussex said that Jofra Archer will not bowl. He mounted his injury as part and parcel of sport but admitted that it is frustrating as a leader when you know he can’t bowl.
“If you saw today he’s not going to bowl tomorrow. You’ll have to ask the ECB. Any time that Jofra can’t bowl you’re going to be frustrated as a leader, or as a team. But it happens. In sports, people get injured. That’s life. That’s a sport,” Sussex head coach Ian Salisbury told reporters on Saturday.
Salisbury further said that Jofra Archer is still willing to play because he wants Sussex to win but it all depends on the ECB whether they will give him permission to play or not.
“He’s still willing to be out there because he wants Sussex to win. They (the ECB) had to give him permission to play this game. He’s not our player so they had to give permission,” he said.
England is set to host New Zealand for a two-match Test series, starting on June 2. After that Joe Root-led side will lock horns against Team India in a five-Test series in August.
