Former Australian leg-spinner Stuart MacGill was allegedly assaulted and kidnapped on April 14 by a group of four people at gunpoint in Sydney. Police have arrested four people in the kidnapping plot.

The 50-year-old was allegedly assaulted and held for over an hour by the group before releasing the cricketer and shockingly the brother of his girlfriend Maria O’Meagher was one of them in the event.

According to a report in Fox Cricket, the three accused of kidnapping MacGill appeared in Sutherland Local Court on Monday (May 10). Notably, there is a maximum penalty of up to 14-years imprisonment for the offense of kidnapping a person in New South Wales, Australia.

Well, now the investigation in the case took a new turn, as one of the accused has claimed that he was unaware of the kidnapping plot in the Sutherland Local Court.

The accuser’s lawyer Greg Goold told foxsports.com.au: “The police would have to establish that ... the applicant was aware of all the elements of the kidnapping, which is an issue, in order to participate in that kidnapping and direct that kidnapping. The evidence does not support that.”

Magistrate Michael Connell has deferred the bail application of one of the accused named Son Minh Nguyen until next week after the court heard that text messages between him and an undercover operative were presented by police as evidence.

Nguyen – who is a key player in the kidnapping plot – will appear in the court on May 19.

Noteworthy, Stuart MacGill played 44 Test matches and three ODIs for Australia making his debut in 1998 before announcing his retirement from international cricket in 2008. He finished with 208 Test wickets and six wickets in ODIs.
