Pakistan bowling coach Waqar Younis is all set to miss the tour of Zimbabwe to be with his wife Dr. Faryal Waqar Younis in Sydney, Australia for her impending surgery in May 2021.
Younis will fly from Harare, Zimbabwe before the start of the forthcoming T20I and Test series and will return to Pakistan during the remainder of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2021 matches in June 2021.
The fast-bowling legend had reportedly decided to fly to Australia early because he has to undergo a 14-day mandatory quarantine at a hotel before reuniting with his family in Sydney as his wife’s surgery is scheduled around May 13-14 – the decision raised speculations about his future with the Pakistan team.
It is being said that Waqar, who is just coming off from a successful South Africa tour, has been facing fatigue issues and missing his family since he has been away on assignments for the last 10 months.
The source said: “The problem is that since Waqar’s family is in Sydney he can’t spend time with them as do the other officials and players of the national team when they return home from a series.”
He further revealed, “Waqar had also taken leave from the team before the second Test in New Zealand to be with his family whom he had called to Lahore, but unfortunately, things didn’t go according to the plans due to the COVID-19 situation. There is no doubt that Waqar is a bit down these days and not his usual self. He is bored as well.”
The source also revealed that Waqar wasn’t satisfied with the response of some of the Pakistan bowlers under his supervision and he could quit the job after the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 in India.
He signed off by saying, “The chances of him stepping down after the World T20 in India in October cannot be ruled out given his present state of mind.”
