South Africa head coach Mark Boucher has hinted at AB de Villiers’ possible international comeback ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 to be held in India in October-November this year.

De Villiers, who announced his international retirement nearly three years ago, was supposed to return to the South Africa team for the T20 World Cup 2020 following his fine performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2020), but it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Well, the decision has yet again sparked in the cricketing circles about the former South Africa captain’s comeback following his stunning knock of 48 runs in 27 balls in Royal Challengers Bangalore’s first game of IPL 2021 against Mumbai Indians.

And now Boucher also admitted the matter about his international comeback is still open and even he talks with the legendary batsman regarding the same.

He further revealed that he had a conversation with De Villiers for his international comeback before he went to India for the IPL 14, saying the matter of his comeback “is still very much open”.

As reported by the South Africa website timeslive.co.za, Boucher told reporters: “I did chat to him (AB de Villiers) before he went to the IPL. The conversation is still very much open.”

He added, “AB, being the person he is, wants to perform very well at the IPL to prove to himself and everyone else that he is still a very key figure in world cricket and could dominate at that level.”

The Proteas has further revealed that he will again have a chat with De Villiers over the matter towards the back end of the ongoing lucrative IPL 2021.

Boucher signed off by saying, “I said to him: ‘Go do your thing, and I’ll give you a shout towards the back-end of the IPL.’ So that is where we are with him.”
