Sri Lanka has been fined 40 percent of match fees by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for slow over-rate during the third and final One Day International (ODI) against West Indies at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on Sunday (March 14).
Having already suffered a 0-3 ODI series whitewash at the hands of the West Indies, the Islanders were now hit by the ICC for maintaining a slow over-rate in the final ODI on Sunday.
An ICC Elite Panel Match Referee Richie Richardson had imposed the charge on Sri Lanka after the tourists were found 2 overs short of the cut-off time after time allowances were taken into consideration in the third ODI in Antigua.
The ICC said in a statement, “In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offenses, players are fined 20 percent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.”
The statement further reads, “In addition, as per Article 12.9.1 of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League Playing Conditions, a side is penalized one point for each over short. Consequently, Sri Lanka will lose two points from their points tally during the Super League.”
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka all-rounder Danushka Gunathilaka was also reprimanded for using inappropriate language towards Nicholas Pooran in the final ODI upon his dismissal in Antigua. The incident occurred in the 35th over of the West Indies innings on Sunday against Sri Lanka.
Karunaratne pleaded guilty to the offense and accepted the sanction proposed by the match referee, so there was no need for a formal hearing.
He has been reprimanded for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the third ODI after the on-field umpires Joel Wilson and Leslie Reifer, third umpire Gregory Brathwaite and fourth umpire Nigel Duguid leveled the charges.

The sports governing body further stated that Gunathilaka was found to “have breached Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match.”
The ICC concluded, “In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to the disciplinary record of Gunathilaka, for whom it was the first offense in a period of 24 months.”
