Sri Lanka opener Danushka Gunathilaka was declared out in the most bizarre way during the opening ODI against West Indies in Antigua on Wednesday (March 10).

The incident happened in the 22nd over of Sri Lanka’s innings when Gunathilaka took a couple of steps out to take a single but changed his mind midway.

In his attempt to get back to the crease, Gunathilaka deflected the ball away from West Indies skipper Kieron Pollard’s reach with the underside of his foot.

Even though it seemed unintentional, Pollard appealed immediately and the soft signal was OUT for obstructing the field.

There was enough evidence to withhold the on-field call as Gunathilaka had to walk back to the pavilion for 55 off 61 deliveries.

Here’s the video:

The decision left Sri Lanka coach Micky Arthur furious as he was seen walking out of the dressing room to have a word with the match referee.

Former West Indies skipper Daren Sammy also felt that Gunathilaka was hard done by the umpires and also added that he would not have appealed for the wicket.
