England's newly-appointed full-time batting coach Marcus Trescothick on Monday (March 1) said he is “ready to jump back” into touring life, but admitted that he is still “building up” to the long trips that usually English players and support staff makes.

Trescothick, who has been assisting England in a part-time capacity since last year, represented England in 76 Tests, 123 ODIs, and 3 T20I, but he had to call time on his six-year international career prematurely back in 2006 due to anxiety and depression problems.

Following the latest signing as England’s elite batting coach, Trescothick will see him working with the England Under-19 and second-string England Lions teams apart from the senior side, which means he is set for the long trips especially in the current COVID-19 scenario.

However, the 45-year-old had already told the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) that he expects to spend no more than five weeks away from home on each individual trip while saying, adapting to the touring lifestyle is part of “an ongoing process” as now full-time batting coach.

Trescothick told the British-based reporters: “We have discussed it and I'm ready to jump back on and do bits and pieces. Do I want to do three months in a row? No, I don't. I'm building up to that sort of point. The little journeys I've done for a couple of weeks here or a month there: that works really well.”

The former left-handed opener added: “I said to them (the ECB) three, four, five weeks, I'm open to all that. It's gradually getting easier for me, my kids are growing up, less dependent on me and I've grown more and more confident to deal with it.”

He signed off by saying, “I'm gradually cutting my teeth on it just to get more confident. Every trip that I do, the more I realize how much I enjoyed the touring life. But that's not to say I'm ready to jump back in and do six weeks or two months or three months away. That's not what I'm ready for yet. And we've discussed that.”
