Australia head coach Justin Langer had recently revealed he stopped one of his players from walking out with a toasted sandwich in his hand against India at the Gabba. It was a high-intensity game with both sides fighting hard for the series win and Langer didn't like the casual approach from the player.

Langer has now named the player while speaking to cricket journalists, Gideon Haigh and Peter Lalor of The Australian on their podcast, Cricket Et Cetera. Earlier, he had only talked about the incident and said, "You’re walking on against India, we’re trying to win a Test match and one of our players walks on with a toasted sandwich in his hand.

“I spoke to (the player) about it at length yesterday. I said, ‘How do you reckon it looks, mate?’ Is that not something I should say?”.

Revealing the name of the player, the 50-year-old said it was none other than Marnus Labuschagne. "Half of this hoo-ha at the weekend is because I told Marnus not to take a ham and cheese toasted sandwich," he said.

Langer hasn't received a positive response to the incident. "And now I'm the grumpiest prick in the world because I told Marnus not to take a toasted ham and cheese sandwich after his 40-minute lunch break."

The Aussie admitted that there have been times he got grumpy. Langer said a drop in standard makes him lose his cool. "If I feel like our standards are dropping, I'm going to get grumpy," he said. "Leadership isn't a popularity contest, sometimes you've got to make tough calls, sometimes you get grumpy, sometimes you get tired.

"That's okay, someone's got to do it and if you get criticized for it, you take that on the chin, you learn from it and you keep getting better."

“One thing I am very good at — and I wouldn’t be here today unless I was great at self-reflection, great at learning — I get advice all the time, one thing I do is I learn and I get better,” he stated.

"The only disappointing thing from the weekend’s reports was there was discussion things were coming from within the camp.

"You know me, I’m a pretty simple bloke, and let’s get this on the record: yeah, I am intense, yeah, I am serious, I am.

"Do I get grumpy sometimes? Yeah, I get grumpy sometimes.

"I’m not perfect that’s for sure, but I’m pretty good at some of the things I do and you just don’t like it when you feel people - through managers or players, whatever - I would rather they came straight to me, that’s the Australian way as I know it - let’s talk through it, let’s go through it and work things out.

"We'll learn from it and hopefully be better for it."

Langer is currently under-fire after the recent loss at home against India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21. A report in the Sydney Morning Herald had said the coach is unable to cope up with the demands of being a three-format coach.

It also went on to add that the Australian cricketers aren't happy with Langer's management style because of his intensity and mood swings.
