Mumbai cricket crisis has gone from bad to worse, as their head coach Amit Pagnis has resigned from his post after his team’s dismal performance in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy 2021.
A day after the Suryakumar Yadav-led Mumbai finished at the bottom of the group table with only one win from five games of the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 2020-21, Pagnis has resigned as the head coach of the team while taking the responsibility for the team’s poor performance in the tournament.
Mumbai was in Group E along with Haryana, Delhi, Kerala, Puducherry, and Andhra Pradesh, and finished at the bottom with only one win from 5 games and crashed out of the knockouts race after their four losses in a row.
Pagnis, who had been appointed Mumbai head coach just over a month ago for the 2020-21 domestic season and his contract would run until March 31, 2021, has reportedly sent his resignation to Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) on Wednesday (January 20).
He was given the charge of the Mumbai outfit 13 days before their first game on January 11 against Delhi in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 and the coach blamed “lack of preparation amidst the COVID-19 pandemic” for his team’s poor performance in the tournament.
Pagnis wrote to the MCA in an email accessed by Sportstar: “I would like to step down from the current position given the team’s performance in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.”
Former cricketer further added, “While I take responsibility for the team’s poor performance, wish to highlight that lack of preparation amidst the pandemic has been a major setback. (The) team barely got any time to prepare and practice together as a team.”
Noteworthy, it remains to whether the MCA accepts Pagnis’ resignation or convinces him to continue for the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy, which is likely to start on February 17.
