BAN v WI 2021: Bangladesh announce squad for 3 ODIs against West Indies, Shakib Al Hasan included after ban

The ODI series starts on January 20 in Dhaka.

Shakib Al Hasan | GettyBangladesh's selectors on Saturday (January 16) named an oversized squad for the three-match ODI series against West Indies, starting January 20 in Dhaka.

The home team called up uncapped all-rounder Mahedi Hasan and pace bowlers Hasan Mahmud and Shoriful Islam in their 18-man squad.

This is going to be Bangladesh's first international assignment post the COVID-19 hiatus.

Chief selector Minhajul Abedin said they announced a relatively large squad as a precaution, with the series being held under strict health protocols.

"We took several extra players because we are facing a pandemic now. You cannot add a player to the squad anytime in this kind of situation," Abedin quoted as saying by AFP.

"Our three uncapped players Mahedi, Hasan and Shoriful have all did well in domestic cricket recently. We included them because we thought it's also a time for us to look for the future," he added.

Ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, who is back in the national reckoning after serving his one-year ban for not reporting a corrupt approach, has been also included in the Bangladesh squad.

Taskin Ahmed was recalled in a pace heavy squad, which also has Rubel Hossain and Mustafizur Rahman.

The second and third ODIs of the series will be held on January 22 and 25 in Dhaka and Chittagong respectively.

Following the ODIs, Bangladesh will host West Indies in two Test matches from February 3.

Bangladesh ODI squad: Tamim Iqbal (C), Shakib Al Hasan, Najmul Hossain, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mohammad Mithun, Liton Das, Mahmud Ullah, Riyad Afif Hossain, Soumya Sarkar, Taskin Ahmed, Rubel Hossain, Taijul Islam, Mustafizur Rahman, Mehidy Hassan, Mohammad Saifuddin, Mahedi Hasan, Hasan Mahmud and Shoriful Islam.
