Ahead of the three-match ODI series in Bangladesh starting January 20, 2021, West Indies suffered a fresh setback on Thursday (January 14) as their star leg-spinner Hayden Walsh Jr tested positive for COVID-19 in the second round of testing and hence was ruled out of the series.
On Thursday, Cricket West Indies (CWI) confirmed that Walsh Jr has tested positive for COVID-19 and has been ruled out of the One-Day International series against Bangladesh as he will now undergo a period of self-isolation in Dhaka.
The leg-spinner is asymptomatic and had tested negative for COVID-19 upon arrival in Dhaka on January 10, but then had a positive return on his test in Dhaka on Wednesday and Thursday and he is now in self-isolation until he gets two negative results.
The CWI said in a statement: “Following PCR tests administered on Wednesday, January 13, Cricket West Indies (CWI) can confirm that Hayden Walsh Jr. has tested positive for COVID-19 and will now undergo a period of self-isolation.”
The statement further reads: “Walsh will remain in isolation until he returns two negative PCR test results and therefore is unavailable to play in the upcoming three-match ODI series against Bangladesh. He is now under the care and supervision of the Team Physician, Dr. Praimanand Singh.”
The CWI further made it clear that Walsh Jr had no contact with the other squad members because the West Indies touring squad has been in individual isolation since arriving in Bangladesh and so there has been no contact between squad members since the arrival.
Noteworthy, all other members of the West Indies touring squad returned negative in the second round of the COVID-19 testing after undergoing four tests within the last 11 days.
