Farokh Engineer recalls Sachin Tendulkar’s funny response to bank asking, "Do you earn over 3 lakhs?"

Engineer was retelling a story when a bank sought Tendulkar's income for a credit card.

Tendulkar was no.9 in Forbes list of richest Indian celebs with Rs 79.96 Cr earning in 2019.Former India cricketer and one of the best wicketkeepers of the game, Farokh Engineer is a goldmine of funny anecdotes given his vast experience in the game and in life as well.

The 82-year-old former cricketer is never shy of telling a funny story involving cricketers and in a recent interview with Indranil Basu on Sportskeeda Live, Engineer recalled how Sachin Tendulkar left a bank stunned with his reply when they were accosting him for a credit card.

He said, “There’s a lovely story about Sachin Tendulkar. With all the wealth he has amassed, the bank club tries to get him to open a credit card. So he is asking routine questions like ‘Mr. Tendulkar, are your earnings in excess of Rs 300,000?’ or something like that.

And Sachin shrugged his shoulders and said some days yes and some days no!

Farokh, who played 46 Tests and 5 ODIs for India from 1961-1975, also recalled how batsmen used to take care of their bats in the old days and how Sunil Gavaskar advocated for better pay for cricketers back in the day.

We used to oil our bats in my time. Now no one oils the bats. These guys get about 20-30 bats. We had one bat that too bought with our own money. We used to get Rs 50 a day to play Test cricket,” Engineer said.

Now you will think it’s a joke. It’s great for cricket now. I think people like Sunil Gavaskar advocated players should earn more money. It was just the officials earning more money those days and players used to lose out,” Engineer recalled.
