NZ v PAK 2020-21: "Have learnt with experience when to play my shots", Tim Seifert after 2nd T20I win

Seifert guided New Zealand to a series-sealing victory along with skipper Kane Williamson.

Tim Seifert | GettyDespite Mohammad Hafeez's unbeaten 99, Pakistan could only manage a score of 163/6 in the second T20I in Hamilton on Sunday (December 20). New Zealand opener Tim Seifert (84*) and Kane Williamson (57*) then batted commendably to guide their team through to a series-sealing nine-wicket win.

The run-chase, however, wasn't always so easy for the visitors despite a lengthy batting unit up their sleeves as they only reached home in the 20th over.

Seifert acknowledged it was partly down to the surface and also some quality Pakistan bowling in the end-overs.

"We probably let them a bit late there but they bowled well and it was the kind of wicket that changed a little bit in the end, but at the end we got the job done," said the explosive wicketkeeper batsman at the post-match press conference, as quoted by Cricbuzz

"They have a good bowling line-up, especially on that wicket, it kind of popped on a good length, so it was tough when you bowled in those good areas, but they got good pace which sometimes came in your favour. On the whole they are a good bowling (unit)," he added.

Fellow opening batsman Martin Guptill may have only faced 11 balls but Seifert said in making 21 runs off those, he set the ball rolling very well for the hosts. He further said Williamson's experience at the other end proved crucial as well as he helped the team play out a tricky period within the chase.

"It was a good start from Guptill as well. I mean Powerplay is big in chases like that and Kane came in, there was a tricky little period when he came in," he said. "But in T20 cricket, if you ride (through it), the tough period could be one, two overs, that one good bowler. And then Kane came in and scored runs."

Known in the Kiwi circuit for his array of shots which allow him to explore different parts of the ground, Seifert said with time he has learnt better how to use his range to greater advantage.

"I have learnt with experience, obviously not doing well in the last series, when to play those shots (ramp), when to go hard, what bowlers to attack. While playing those 360 degree shots, if you're not 100 percent... it is learning to pull out, learning to play a normal shot. Just little things like that have all helped."

The Black Caps are trying a rotation policy with their players for what is a long home summer. The rotation saw pacer Jacob Duffy make his international debut in the first game and immediately impress with a four-fer, before veterans Tim Southee and Williamson returned for this encounter. Seifert is pleased with the depth of talent within the squad.

"It is awesome to see Duffy doing well... and those guys who had a break, coming and performing for the team that we have got... we don't just rely on one bowler, as is the case with the batting, we have a good batting (unit) at the moment," he signed off.
