While the novel Coronavirus did not hit the ongoing Lankan Premier League (LPL 2020) tournament directly, it has taken away the head coach of the Colombo Kings. Herschelle Gibbs has resigned from the post after three of his family members have tested positive for COVID-19.
Gibbs, who was initially slated in as a commentator for the tournament, landed up with the coaching job just a couple of days before the opening game. While the announcement came on Saturday, December 12, Gibbs revealed the reason behind it on Sunday.

He quoted a tweet mentioning his resignation and let the fans know why he had taken the decision. The former South African cricketer revealed that his mother has contracted the virus and is admitted to a hospital while his brother and sister are recovering from it.
Gibbs wrote, "Mom in hospital covid reasons. Brother was also in hospital from covid and sister recovering from covid.. had to come back home."
