Former India stumper Kiran More was ecstatic after the new kit sponsors of the Indian team decided to go for the 1992 Benson and Hedges World Cup design for the upcoming limited-overs series against Australia starting Friday, November 27, 2020.
More was part of the Indian team which played in the 1992 World Cup under the captaincy of Mohammad Azharuddin. This World Cup was the first to have colored clothing, matches under lights, and used two new white balls at each end. It was a history-making tournament, which also saw the return of South Africa, who played their first World Cup.
More shared his own 1992 World Cup jersey on Twitter in reaction to the new-look India jersey, which was revealed by Shikhar Dhawan on Twitter yesterday.
More, who played for India from 1984-1993, was pleasantly surprised and turned nostalgic and shared his 1992 World Cup jersey which he had preserved. It stands out a lot from the one that India will wear against Australia, as it has a cleaner look with the absence of multiple sponsors, and ‘India’ written across it in yellow.
“I come across many people who agree that this was the best jersey of the Indian team. The color is amazing and it is still fresh in people’s minds. It was the first time we played a World Cup in colored clothing and with the white ball. Ask any cricketer from my generation and they will say the 1992 World Cup jersey is the best. We had played in colored clothing earlier but not at a World Cup,” More told The Indian Express.
More is remembered for riling up Pakistan’s Javed Miandad with his appeals from behind the wicket, which saw the batsman jump up and down to mock him.
Though India finished seventh in the tournament with just two wins, it does not take away any emotion attached to the jersey for More. “Other than the jersey, I even have the sweater,” More said. “It is very precious to me.”
