Pakistan Test captain Azhar Ali on Thursday (October 29) quashed “rumors” of him being removed soon from his position by saying the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has not yet spoken to him on the issue.

There were reports making rounds that the white-ball captain Babar Azam could replace Azhar as Pakistan Test captain ever since the PCB CEO Wasim Khan had revealed that the board wasn’t sure whether the current skipper would be captain for the upcoming tour of New Zealand.

Even Wasim had stated that the decision regarding Test captaincy would be taken in a meeting on 11 November but Azhar is still thinking “these are only rumors” since he wasn’t aware of all it.

Azhar, the veteran of 81 Tests, was appointed Test captain last October while the PCB confirmed him as captain for the 2020/21 Test season in May 2020. However, he couldn’t deliver the desired result both as captain and batsman which led to the talks of him being removed from the position.

In a virtual conference in Karachi, Azhar said: “The PCB has not spoken to me about this and I also know about these rumors through the media so I am not in a position to say anything on this.”

The 35-year-old further added while insisting captaincy is not a burden for him, “What can I say when no one has spoken to me on this subject for now I just think these are only rumors and nothing else.”

He signed off by saying, “It makes no sense to think about these things because I am focussing on the First-Class matches and international cricket. Look when anyone talks to me about this officially then I will be in a position to say something.”
