England hosted Australia at The Old Trafford in Manchester for the first ODI on 11 September. The Australians batted first and managed to get 294 runs on the board.

England lost a few early wickets in the run-chase and never recovered to reach the target. The only highlight for England in the second innings was a maiden ODI hundred for Sam Billings. The 29-year-old scored 118 runs off 110 balls but still couldn't get his side over the line as they lost the game by 19 runs.

During his exemplary knock, he hit 14 boundaries and two sixes. In the 27th over of the innings, Billings smacked one over long-off and the ball literally went out of the ground. Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh had to go into the parking lot to fetch the ball himself.
