Dawid Malan overtakes Babar Azam to become new No.1 T20I batsman

Malan made a significant jump in rankings after topping the run-charts against Australia.

Dawid Malan | GettyEngland's middle-order southpaw, Dawid Malan, has displaced Pakistan's skipper Babar Azam as the No.1 T20I batsman in ICC player rankings.

Malan, 33, has made a jump of four slots to remove Babar from the numero uno spot after fantastic performances against Australia.

Malan topped the run-charts with 129 runs at a strike-rate of 138.71 in his team's 2-1 series win.

Malan's previous best ranking slot was second in November last year. The left-hander is now eight rating points ahead of Babar, whose two innings in the recent series in UK saw him make 77 runs at a strike-rate of 124.19.

KL Rahul, the Indian opener, who hasn't played any international cricket since March due to COVID-19 pandemic, is now fourth in the list where his skipper Virat Kohli has gained a spot and now rests at ninth.

As per the ICC update on Wednesday (September 9), Jonny Bairstow and Jos Buttler have also moved forward in the rankings. Bairstow gained three slots to reach a career-best 19th position while Buttler is now 28th following a 12-slot jump for his terrific batsmanship in the first two T20I versus the arch-rivals.

Leg-spinner Adil Rashid was the other beneficiary in the rankings, gaining two slots to reach the seventh position after six wickets in three innings and pacer Mark Wood moved up 41 places to be at the 79th spot.

Among the Australians, skipper Aaron Finch retained his third spot after 125 runs in the series. Glenn Maxwell kept himself at No.6 spot as a batsman while also jumping one slot to reach second position in the list of all-rounders, which is led by Mohammad Nabi from Afghanistan.

Pacer Kane Richardson moved into the top 10 in his career for the very first time. His teammate Mitchell Starc also went up seven places to be 18th in the list.

In the team rankings, Australia regained the No.1 spot after being dislodged briefly by England through the series.

Australia started off 10 points ahead of England. But after the first two matches, the home team equalled the rivals at 273 points, being placed ahead on decimals.

The victory in the third and final game on Tuesday once again brought the Aussies at top.
