Former Maharashtra Ranji cricketer Shekhar Gawli died after falling in a 250-feet-deep gorge while trekking in the Igatpuri Taluka of Nashik district in Maharashtra.
The 45-year-old who played two first-class matches for Maharashtra had reportedly gone for trekking in the Western Ghat mountains of Igatpuri hill station in Nashik along with some of his friends on Tuesday evening but allegedly lost his balance and fell into the gorge.
Police stated that Gawli, the fitness coach of the Maharashtra U-23 cricket team, was found dead on Wednesday (September 2) afternoon after a long search.
An official from Igatpuri police station confirmed the saddened news to PTI: “His body was found at around 10 am on Wednesday. The body will be handed over to the family members after postmortem.”
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Cricket Association mourned Gawli’s sad passing of Gawli on Twitter.
The state cricket body said: “In a tragic incident our former player and current Trainer of Maharashtra team Shekhar Gawli, passed away tragically. Our condolences to his family and friends. We are all with his family in this tragic situation. May his soul rest in peace.”
Noteworthy, Gawli was the assistant coach of the Maharashtra Ranji team and was currently serving as the fitness trainer of the Under-23 team.
