Pakistan’s limited-overs captain and batting talisman Babar Azam has expressed disappointment at his own performance on the just-concluded England tour, as the Men in Green, managed to level the T20I series, but could not win a single Test.
On Tuesday (September 1), Pakistan ended a disappointed 3-month long tour of England with a series-leveling five-run win in the final T20I amid the COVID-19 pandemic, losing three-Test series 0-1 and leveling the T20I series with the first game washed out.
In the three Tests, Babar made 195 runs at an average of over 48 and added 77 more runs across two innings in the T20Is. and the skipper was disappointed with his individual performances against England but noted he learned a lot from the tour.
Babar said after the end of the final game in England, “I am a little disappointed that I started well in the Test series but I wasn't able to convert them into big runs. There were tough conditions and I had a goal of scoring at least two centuries but unfortunately, I wasn't able to do that.”
He continued, “I've learned a lot on how to score runs in England and how to build an innings here. I hope I don't repeat my mistakes going forward. In the last game, I wasn't able to finish the innings. There is no pressure on me. We learned a lot during these two months. I feel we played good cricket. Yes, we lost the Test series but I feel we played well. There were mistakes but learned from it and we'll try to rectify it.”
On the criticism over his captaincy, especially decision making, Babar said he was always in charge of decisions and will always look at the seniors for suggestions in the team.
Babar signed off by saying, “You can only move forward when you have experienced player in the side. Whenever the going gets tough, it's the senior players who get the team out of it. I've learned a lot from Hafeez and Shoaib Malik. It's very important that they are there in the side. You have to make a good combination.”
