Former India batsman Suresh Raina responded to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's letter after his retirement. PM Modi wrote a letter of appreciation to Raina over his successful international career.

Raina was part of the World Cup 2011 and the ICC Champions Trophy 2013 tournament victory. He played 226 ODIs, 18 Tests, and 78 T20Is for India and was the first Indian cricketer to score a hundred in all three formats.

In the letter, PM Modi recollected watching Raina's knocks and he mentioned his special one against Australia in World Cup 2011 quarter-final at Motera. Raina had scored an unbeaten 34 which helped India secure a place in the semi-final.

“I do not want to use the word ‘retirement’ because you are too young and energetic to ‘retire’,” PM Modi said. “During your cricketing career, you sometimes faced setbacks including injuries but every time you overcame those challenges, thanks to your tenacity,” he said.

“India can never forget your inspiring role during the 2011 World Cup, especially during the later matches. I saw you live in action at the Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad, during the Quarter Final against Australia. Your anchoring innings had a big role to play in our team’s victory.

“I can confidently say that most fans will miss your elegant cover drives, one which I was lucky to witness that day,” added the PM, who was back then the Chief Minister of Gujarat.

Raina responded to the letter and tweeted, “When we play, we give our blood & sweat for the nation. No better appreciation than being loved by the people of this country and even more by the country’s PM. Thank you @narendramodi ji for your words of appreciation & best wishes. I accept them with gratitude. Jai Hind."

The 33-year-old will be in action for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2020 from September 19 in UAE.
