The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), in its Apex Council meeting on Tuesday, decided to name three blocks (from the far eastern end) of the North Stand at the iconic Wankhede Stadium after former India and Mumbai captain Dilip Vengsarkar.
Apex Council member Nadim Memon had forwarded the suggestion earlier this month and the resolution to implement this move was "unanimously accepted" in the meeting.
Vengsarkar played 116 Tests and 125 ODIs from 1976-1992 and made 6868 Tests and 3508 ODI runs with a total of 18 centuries to his name. He is the only batsman to hit three consecutive hundreds at the home of English cricket, Lord’s.
He was also the MCA vice-president from 2001 to 2017 and was the chairman of selectors as well.
The MCA has also included Vengsarkar in its museum committee which includes ex-MCA president Ravi Savant, ex-BCCI official Ratnakar Shetty, MCA CEO CS Naik, ex-BCCI media manager Devendra Prabhudesai, ex-committee member Naveen Shetty and senior journalist Clayton Murzello.
Apex Council member Ajinkya Naik has also proposed to name a specific seat in the Wankhede Stadium after MS Dhoni to commemorate the memory of his six that won India the 2011 World Cup. He also proposed to find that ball and preserve it in the museum.
