Dean Jones takes a cheeky dig at MS Dhoni’s potential replacements in Team India

MS Dhoni retired from international cricket on August 15.

Rishabh Pant and KL RahulMS Dhoni finally called time on his international career in his own unique way by posting a collage of photos encapsulating his journey for the Indian team on Instagram set to Bollywood hit song “Main Pal Do Pal ka Shayr Hu”.

After his retirement, Indian selectors are now free to pick options for his replacement in limited-overs cricket and it seems that even outsiders are interested in which wicketkeeper takes over going forward.

Former Australia batsman Dean Jones took to Twitter in order to take a cheeky dig at two potential replacements for MS Dhoni, whom the Indian selectors have tried for the past year. Dhoni took a sabbatical from the sport after India's exit from the 2019 World Cup semi-finals, which eventually turned out to be his final game in the Blue jersey.

Media criticism and speculations played a role in MS Dhoni’s retirement, says "heartbroken" Banerjee

This gave selectors a chance to try out Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul in his place with varying degrees of success. Therefore, Dean Jones took a dig at both of these players and tweeted, "After MS Dhoni retirement yesterday... I bet you KL Rahul and R Pant slept well last night!!

22-year-old Rishabh Pant was being groomed by the team management to take over from Dhoni, however, he failed to perform up to standards both in front of the stumps and with the gloves, making numerous mistakes, especially in limited-overs games.

He suffered a concussion in an ODI against Australia and that led to Virat Kohli giving the gloves to KL Rahul, who did an amazing job and continued to do keep wickets against New Zealand as well earlier this year.

The additional responsibility though has only benefitted Rahul, whose average has gone up from 47.66 in 2019 to 70 this year in 50-overs cricket. Even in the shortest format, his average has risen from 44.50 last year to 53.83 in 2020 after being asked to essay dual roles in the limited-overs team.
