Ponting took to Twitter and congratulated Dhoni on a brilliant international career.

MS Dhoni and Ricky Ponting during the 2011 World Cup QF | AFPAustralia’s Ricky Ponting, one of the most successful cricket captains in the world, paid respects to his one-time India counterpart MS Dhoni after the latter announced his retirement from international cricket on August 15.

Dhoni, 39, played 15 years of international cricket, winning all the three ICC trophies and took India to the pinnacle of ICC Test team rankings in 2009. Apart from that, Dhoni holds the unique record of defeating Australia in all eight Tests at home. Many of which were captained by Ponting himself.

Dhoni-led India team also ended Australia-led by Ponting’s winning streak as world champions by defeating them in the quarter-finals of the 2011 World Cup, this after Ponting had won the 2003 and 2007 World Cups as Australia captain.

Wishing Dhoni all the best and hoping to see him soon in IPL 2020, Ponting paid his tribute on Twitter and shared a photo of the two.

Congrats @msdhoni on a brilliant international career. I loved and enjoyed every contest we had as players and now I still have to find ways to stop you winning games against the @DelhiCapitals. Look forward to saying it in person in a few weeks time,” Ponting tweeted.
