MCA to discuss celebrating golden jubilee of Sunil Gavaskar's Test debut, Ankit Chavan's plea to lift ban

The apex council meeting of the Mumbai Cricket Association will be held on August 18.

Sunil Gavaskar | GettyCelebrating the golden jubilee of the great Sunil Gavaskar's Test debut in Port of Spain on the 1971 tour of the West Indies is among the topics to be discussed by the Mumbai Cricket Council (MCA) during its apex council meeting on August 18, says a report by PTI

Gavaskar remains among the most famous sons of the city, being the first in the history of the game to make 10,000 Test runs.

He retired in 1987 with 10,122 runs in his kitty to be precise, making them in 125 Tests at an average of 51.12. His record of 34 Test centuries wasn't broken until another Mumbaikar and a player of legendary status, Sachin Tendulkar, did so in 2005.

The MCA meeting that is to be held next week was originally scheduled for Friday (August 13), but was postponed.

"To discuss about a plan to celebrate the occasion of Mr Sunil Gavaskar completing 50 years of his Test Debut on 6th March 2021," reads one of the agenda points for the meeting, a listed copy of which is with the PTI.

Further, the association's apex council members will discuss arriving at a potential response to a letter written by Ankit Chavan.

Chavan, a Mumbai-born all-rounder, is facing a life ban in a case about his alleged involvement in the 2013 IPL spot-fixing saga.

He is seeking MCA's help in making the BCCI revisit the length of his ban.

Apart from that, the MCA will deliberate upon hosting a virtual Annual General Meeting (AGM) in the near future.

Discussions will also be held on association's proposed museum to be set-up at the Wankhede Stadium.
