New Zealand wicketkeeper-batsman BJ Watling has recently named the toughest bowling pair he has faced in his career so far in Test cricket.

Watling, who is arguably the best Test wicketkeeper-batsman in the world cricket presently, has been playing Test cricket for more than a decade, having made his debut in 2009.

The right-handed Test specialist has been a prolific run-scorer in recent years and in fact, he scored more runs (3658 runs from 70 Tests) as designated wicketkeeper than anyone else this decade.

Over the years, the 35-year-old Watling has faced some of the greatest and fearsome bowlers around the world of this generation in his decade-long career, but he has found India’s spin duo Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja as one of the toughest pairs he has faced in his career. He also rated South African Test bowling duo Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel as challenging one to play.

Watling said: “When it’s turning in India it’s obviously very tough to play any spinner, really. The likes of [Ravichandran] Ashwin and [Ravindra] Jadeja, if conditions are in their favor, it is extremely hard work to score runs in itself, and to not get out.”

He signed off by saying, “But facing guys like Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel in South Africa, that’s a pretty tough challenge. I think they have some of the quicker wickets in the world and obviously it cracks up late in the games. And those types of test matches can be very daunting, with those types of bowlers coming at you.”
